About

System monitoring is a skill that cannot be replaced with software. Yes, there are products on the market which are quickly installed on clients and provide basic system statistics. Other products perform client discoveries and monitor via SNMP. However, all these products perform system analytics based upon the software vendor’s expectations. What about your systems?

Another aspect to consider about COTS are the messages. The system monitoring software sends a message that the “JMS has dropped a client due to excessive processing time”, do organizational personnel understand the meaning other the messages? What are the other symptoms to examine in order to determine is the previous messages is routine or the prelude to a larger problem? System monitoring involves providing messages that are active and not passive in nature.

System monitoring is active in nature. System Administrators build the systems and work with the systems, so shouldn’t they be the ones to design the monitoring of those systems? Trying to replace the System Administration team with software may appear to be cost effective but in the long run will jeopardize the organization’s ability to respond to emerging markets and the overall financial health of the organization.

This website is dedicated to the System Administrator and management that possess an understanding of how systems work and the methods used to monitor those systems. Ideas will be presented for evaluation and everyone is encouraged to participate. You can email me with suggestions or articles that you would like posted on this website.
